Seton Scott is not your average physio. With over 12 years experience in the industry, he has his own take on what physical therapy actually means and the best way to deliver it.
His approach focuses on making people the priority.
His rapidly growing clinics offer a fresh and individualized approach to traditional physiotherapy – not only treating injuries but preventing them and promoting optimal health through motivating, activating, educating and inspiring.
We spoke with Seton about the ethos and motivation behind TCCP.
What can physiotherapy offer people?
“Physiotherapy is an amazing model of healthcare to provide to people. Of course we treat injuries and pathologies, and help get people back to work, sports and the things they love. But often people don’t realise physio can be used to preventatively, keeping the mind and body healthy.”
How is TCCP different from other clinics?
“We’re different in lots of ways.
First of all, most of our sessions are 60 minutes, a lot longer than the majority of clinics. You can’t even have a decent shower in 20 minutes, how can you hope to fix an injury in that time?! The longer sessions mean we can provide more and better treatment, and we can also really engage with our clients, understand their concerns and goals and build trust and long-term relationships.
We also work really hard to be leaders in the ‘pro-active health movement’, which means keeping people healthy, identifying things before they become an issue and motivating people to keep on track with their health and goals.”
What types of treatment techniques and modalities do you use?
“We have tons of treatment options that are all really effective. It’s about choosing the right thing for the individual client, and modifying things as you go to maximize treatment and prevent boredom – both the client’s and the physio’s!
Many physios are really good at just one modality, so they focus on that. But not us. We’ll always integrate exercise, education and biomechanical retraining as well as hands-on work and alternatives like acupuncture, massage and pilates. We take a wide-reaching, holistic approach to provide the best treatment.”
How do you make sure that all the physios at TCCP are up to scratch?
“To start with we pick the right characters, that’s really key.
Then, we give our physios a huge amount of professional development and support – far more than is required by the Physiotherapy Board. This means they’re learning constantly and also become highly skilled at treatment techniques and planning.
To provide this level of education, it also means senior physios are always refreshing their knowledge and keeping up to date on latest research. The 60 minute appointments mean physios can feel absolutely certain they’re giving their clients the best, and really operate in an autonomous, unpressured way. It’s really empowering.”
You’ve set up TCCP with a really clear ethos, that’s a bit different to the average physio, where does this come from?
“When I started out over 12 years ago, I was thrown into clinics that saw me working back-to-back clients, often with 4 – 6 clients per hour.
While I built a good strong skill-set, I began to question how ethical this model was – just getting numbers through to generate income. Actually fixing people wasn’t the priority.
At the end of the day I figure you’ve got to go to work believing in what you’re doing. So at TCCP we’ve made an active choice to provide health over dollars – we aim to do the job properly and fix everyone that comes through our doors.”
